Convergence Rates in Nonparametric Bayesian Density Estimation

چکیده

We consider Bayesian density estimation for compactly supported densities using Bernstein mixtures of beta-densities equipped with a Dirichlet prior on the distribution function. We derive the rate of convergence for α-smooth densities for 0 < α ≤ 2 and show that a faster rate of convergence can be obtained by using fewer terms in the mixtures than proposed before. The Bayesian procedure adapts to the unknown value of α. The modified Bayesian procedure is rate-optimal if α is at most one. This result can be extended to two dimensions.

Bayesian nonparametric estimation of the spectral density of a long or intermediate memory Gaussian process

A stationary Gaussian process is said to be long-range dependent (resp. anti-persistent) if its spectral density f(λ) can be written as f(λ) = |λ|g(|λ|), where 0 < d < 1/2 (resp. −1/2 < d < 0), and g is continuous. We propose a novel Bayesian nonparametric approach for the estimation of the spectral density of such processes. Within this approach, we prove posterior consistency for both d and g...

Adaptive Bayesian procedures using random series prior

We consider a prior for nonparametric Bayesian estimation which uses finite random series with a random number of terms. The prior is constructed through distributions on the number of basis functions and the associated coefficients. We derive a general result on adaptive posterior convergence rates for all smoothness levels of the function in the true model by constructing an appropriate “siev...

Parametrically assisted nonparametric estimation of a density in the deconvolution problem

Nonparametric estimation of a density from contaminated data is a difficult problem, for which convergence rates are notoriously slow. We introduce parametrically assisted nonparametric estimators which can dramatically improve on performance of standard nonparametric estimators when the assumed model is close to the true density, without degrading much the quality of purely nonparametric estim...

Nonparametric Density Estimation: Toward Computational Tractability

Density estimation is a core operation of virtually all probabilistic learning methods (as opposed to discriminative methods). Approaches to density estimation can be divided into two principal classes, parametric methods, such as Bayesian networks, and nonparametric methods such as kernel density estimation and smoothing splines. While neither choice should be universally preferred for all sit...
